Angela Watson

Born in Warburton, Western Australia in 1966, Angela moved to community of Pipalyatjara as a young child. Angela first started painting in 2006 when artist Amanda Dent set up the first aboriginal painting studios in the western Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) lands. Her story, Minyma Kutjara (Two Women Dreaming) is an important tjukurpa (dreaming) from her father’s country, Irrunytju, just west of Ninuku Arts. Her works tell the story of two women travelling by themselves looking for fresh kapi (water), and escaping the advances of a stalking Wati (man). These paintings correlate the path and camps of their journey across the lands to nighttime constellations of the Milky Way above. Angela currently works with bold, graphic colour pallets and is notable in her use of contemporary techniques and composition to tell traditional story.
